Some journeys change more than just your scenery, they change your heart, your perspective, and even your life. That is the magic of the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage that has captivated thousands across the world, including Lauren Donahue and me, Jess Dahl. On this episode of the Say Yes Anyway Podcast, we dive into why this centuries-old journey continues to call so many people to step out, slow down, and say yes to transformation.
Answering the Call
Every Camino story begins with a call, sometimes gentle, sometimes unexpected. For Lauren, it was a serendipitous encounter with a book that planted the seed. For me, it was a spontaneous invitation from my mom that set the wheels in motion. Both of us learned quickly that saying yes to the unknown, even when it feels inconvenient or scary, is central to the Camino experience.
The Camino is more than a walk. It is an intentional choice to step into uncertainty with trust, openness, and courage. And that choice is exactly what opens the door to transformation.
A Pilgrimage Through History and the Soul
The Camino de Santiago began centuries ago as a pilgrimage route to the cathedral of the apostle Saint James in northwest Spain called Santiago de Compostela. Over time, it has evolved from a religious journey into a modern-day adventure of personal growth, healing, and self-discovery that is open to anyone and everyone.
Each step on the Camino offers an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with yourself, with others, and with something greater than yourself. It’s a rhythm of life that encourages presence and mindfulness, a counterbalance to a world that rarely slows down.
Transformation Along the Way
The Camino changes everyone in different ways. Some participants join carrying grief or a specific intention and leave with a deeper understanding of trust, resilience, and joy. Others discover unexpected gifts: a renewed sense of courage, a fresh perspective on life, or profound insights about letting go.
Through our own experiences and stories from past participants, we’ve seen time and again how the Camino creates a space for breakthroughs, connection, and inner healing. Take Lisa, who came searching for deeper parts of herself and found a safe, supportive community. Or Ilaria, who thought she was walking for others but realized step by step that her journey was for her own healing and growth.
Practical Considerations
While the Camino is a spiritual and personal journey, it’s also approachable. With thoughtful logistics like bag transfers, supportive accommodations, and a welcoming community along the route, the Camino is accessible to all fitness levels. It’s a safe, encouraging environment for anyone ready to say yes to the adventure.
Saying Yes to Your Own Journey
The Camino is an invitation to step outside your comfort zone, embrace the unknown, and walk a path that is as much about your inner life as it is about the miles you cover. It reminds us that transformation often comes when we slow down, reflect, and allow ourselves to be present.
If you’ve ever felt the pull to experience something profound, life-changing, and deeply personal, the Camino de Santiago may be calling you. It’s a journey that offers both adventure and healing, community and solitude, challenge and joy.
