I Got Married: A Story of Redemptive Love After Heartbreak, Healing, and Uncertainty

Can God write something beautiful in the middle of heartbreak, healing, and uncertainty?
I used to think that question had a simple answer. Wait until you're healed. Wait until life makes sense again. Wait until you have something whole to offer someone else before you let them in.
Then I met Char again, over ten years after the first time our lives crossed paths, and I learned that God doesn't usually wait for us to be finished. Sometimes He starts writing the next chapter of your story right in the middle of the hardest one.
This is that story. And for the first time, Char and I are telling it publicly, together, on the Say Yes Anyway Podcast.
Two People, Two Broken Seasons, One Unexpected Reunion
Char and I weren't strangers. We had met over a decade earlier, in a completely different season of both of our lives, and then life did what life does. We went our separate ways. Different cities. Different chapters. Different versions of ourselves.
When our paths crossed again, neither of us was standing in a season that looked like the beginning of a love story.
I was in the middle of recovering from a devastating car accident, one that had physically and emotionally forced me to step back from the work I had spent years building. My body was healing. My identity was, too. I wasn't the version of myself who had it all together, the coach, the podcast host, the one with the answers. I was just a woman trying to figure out how to rebuild.
Char was doing his own version of rebuilding. He had come through a divorce. A stroke. Significant financial loss. And, not long after we reconnected, unexpected seizures that added a whole new layer of uncertainty to a life that already felt like it was being remade from the ground up.
If you had told either of us, in the middle of those seasons, that we were about to fall in love, I don't think either of us would have believed you. Not because it wasn't possible. Because it didn't make sense.
When Nothing About It Made Sense On Paper
Here's the honest list of reasons we had to walk away before we ever really began:
We were living on different continents. We were both still in active seasons of healing, physically and emotionally. Neither of us had the bandwidth, on paper, to take on someone else's rebuilding while we were still in the middle of our own. And if we're being fully transparent, there were moments early on where the sheer number of unknowns felt like a good enough reason to just stay safe and stay apart.
But there's a difference between fear and wisdom, even when they whisper the same warnings.
Fear says what if this falls apart. Faith says what's the next right step. And somewhere in the middle of two broken seasons colliding, we made a choice that would end up defining everything that came after it: we chose to trust God's timing over what our circumstances seemed to be telling us.
That choice didn't make the uncertainty disappear. It just meant we stopped waiting for the uncertainty to disappear before we said yes.
What Long-Distance, Rebuilding Love Actually Taught Us
There's a version of love that gets built on convenience, proximity, and timing that just happens to work out. That was not our story. Ours was built through distance, through healing that was still very much in progress, and through learning to trust someone while we were both still learning to trust ourselves again.
Long-distance dating, in a season where both of us were still recovering, taught us something most people don't talk about: intentionality isn't romantic in the movie sense. It's showing up, consistently, even when it's inconvenient. It's choosing honesty over performance because you don't have the luxury of glossing over hard things when a relationship is being built across time zones and healing seasons at the same time.
It also taught me something I now teach the women I coach: healing isn't something you have to complete before you're worthy of love, of purpose, of the next chapter God has for you. I used to believe I needed to arrive somewhere first. Char and I found each other in the middle of the unfinished parts, and that ended up being exactly where we needed to be found.
There was a specific moment, one we talk about in detail in the episode, when I knew I could actually trust this. Not because every fear disappeared. Because peace showed up where I expected panic to be. And I've learned that healthy love rarely feels like fireworks and perfection. More often, it feels like peace, the kind that doesn't need to be forced.
In This Episode, We Talk About
- How Char and I reconnected more than ten years after we first met
- Why our relationship began during one of the hardest seasons of both our lives
- What I learned while recovering from a life-changing car accident
- How Char navigated divorce, a stroke, seizures, and financial loss
- Why we chose to trust God's timing instead of our circumstances
The mindset shift that helped me stop living in the "what ifs"
- What long-distance dating taught us about intentional relationships
- The unexpected moment I knew I could trust this relationship
- Why healthy love often feels more like peace than perfection
- How saying yes changed the course of both of our lives
What This Season Taught Us
- God often does His greatest work in seasons that feel uncertain.
- Healing isn't something you have to finish before you're worthy of love.
- Healthy relationships are built on honesty, faith, and intentionality.
- Fear focuses on "what if." Faith chooses the next step.
- God's plans rarely look the way we expect, but they're always worth trusting.
If there's one thing I hope you take from our story, it's this: your hardest season isn't a disqualifier. It's not proof that you're behind, unworthy, or too far gone for something beautiful to still be written. Sometimes the very season that feels like it's falling apart is the one God is quietly using to prepare you for what's next.
Char and I are proof of that. Two people, two seasons that looked nothing like the beginning of a love story, and a marriage that exists anyway, not because the timing was convenient, but because we said yes before it made sense.

There's More to This Story
This is only the first half. In Part 2, Char and I share what happened after we got engaged, the unexpected challenges we navigated along the way, and what we're continuing to learn about building a marriage rooted in faith, healing, community, impact, and purpose. If this episode moved you, Part 2 goes even deeper into what it actually looks like to build a life together after two seasons of rebuilding.
